The latter is clearly the centerpiece of the multiplayer, in many ways mirroring the gameplay of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Enemy Territory. It might be easy to overlook the fact that Pacific Assault also has multiplayer support, featuring three modes: free-for-all, team deathmatch and a new mode called Invader. The Director's Edition ships on DVD, a nice convenience, so if you're dead set on buying the game, those features make it well worth the extra $5-10, especially if you're a history buff. The "Director's Edition" DVD also contains several nice extras, from several DVD-style featurettes on the war in the Pacific as well as "making of" segments. Particularly cool are the "pop-up facts" that offer tidbits on the war as you play. The orchestral score (which is excellent) goes from patriotic to somber, and there are bits of historical information to be found everywhere. After some experimentation, it was lowering the hardware shader setting from 2.0 to 1.1 that produced the biggest improvement from there, we were able to play the game at a resolution of 1024x768 with acceptable response.Ĭinematics look great in the new Pacific Assault engine.Īside from one questionable term used throughout the game, Pacific Assault generally takes a respectful tone towards war and American veterans.

This was complicated by the needlessly complex Windows launch menu, which forces you to choose not only a resolution but also a refresh rate, and requires you to exit and restart every time you want to test out a new video setting (get used to watching the opening load screens over and over).

We were initially experiencing all sorts of sluggishness in terms of mouse response, even on a stacked Alienware PC with a 3.0 Ghz CPU, a GeForce 6800 and 1GB RAM. As mentioned in our first impressions article, we had some issues getting Pacific Assault running smoothly. It's worth noting that the eye candy comes at a bit of a price. From both a visual and gameplay perspective, it would have been nice to see a little more variety in the jungle areas before you reach the final missions at Tarawa. It's a shame that so much of the game looks the same - one jungle looks like the next, with the occasional village or camp or river to break things up. Even the in-game menu is set inside a pseudo-level with surroundings and characters that change over the course of the game. There are other artistic touches, such as the color momentarily draining every time you're shot, and an endless supply of sepia-toned loading screens.

The jungles are a standout: they're modeled with amazing detail, and at times they go beyond photo-realistic and into the realm of looking like live video.

It's not just the fact that EA's brand-new engine can do technical things like impressive hi-res models, lighting effects and ragdoll physics there's an aesthetic beauty to the world that makes everything attractive to look at, including an effective use of color. From an artistic perspective, Pacific Assault is a beautiful game.
